Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes (Amendment)

Regulations, 2025

IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by article 7(2) of the

Animal Welfare Act, the Minister responsible for veterinary services,

has made the following regulations:-

(1) The title of these regulations is the Protection of Citation and

Animals Used for Scientific Purposes (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 scope.

and these regulations shall be read and construed as one with the

Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes Regulations, S.L. 439.20.

hereinafter referred to as the "principal regulations".

(2) The scope of these regulations is to transfer the remit of

these regulations from the Department responsible for Veterinary

Services to the Directorate responsible for Animal Welfare.

Regulation 3 of the principal regulations shall be amended Amends

(a) the definition "competent authority" thereof shall be

substituted by the following new definition

""competent authority" means the Directorate

responsible for Animal Welfare which is designated to

carry out the obligations arising from these regulations;";

(b) immediately after the definition "competent

authority", as substituted, there shall be added the following new

definition

" "Director" means the Director for Animal

Welfare;".

Sub-regulation (1) of regulation 48 of the principal Amends

regulations shall be substituted by the following new sub-regulation: regulation

"(1) The Animal Welfare Council established for the

protection of animals used for scientific purposes in conjunction

with the Director, shall advise the animal-welfare body on

matters relating to the acquisition, breeding, accommodation,

care and use of animals in scientific procedures and shall ensure

the sharing of best practice.".
