Citation and interpretation

(I)

These regulations may he cited as lhe \;faster of Educaliol' -

\l.hi. - Degree Course Regulations. 1998.

(2) In lhese regulations, unless the context otherwise rcqLlirc~-

"[he Boarrl" means the BO£lro of the Faculty ol'1~oucation;

"the HOMO olStuclies" means the Goarcl o[Sturlics for th::: Degree;

"1\.e Course" means the course Ieaoing to the Degree; ancl

"lhe Degree" me,H1S the Degree of Master of Education - M.t:d.

Applicability

These regulations shall he applicahle to courses starting

Admission

(I) Ltnclirl<lll''' (or admission to Ihe Course shall he holders of

(a) a degree with at least second class honours from the Faculty of

Education or an equivalenr qualification, and a minimum of two years'

teaching experience or other rt.-levanr experience in a recognised educational

settmg; or

a degree \v1th at lea:;! second class honours together with a

recognisen teaching qualification, and a minimum or two years' teaching

experience or other relevant experience in a recognised educational setting;

(c) a recognised qualification, other than the qualifications mentioned

in sub-paragraphs (a) and (h) of paragraph (l) ot this regulation, together

with a diploma in Education, of this or another university recognised hy the

Senate for this purpose, and a minimum of five years' teaching experience or

other relevant experience in a recognised educational setting,

provided that, candidates admitted in terms of suh-paragraph (c) of

paragraph (1) of this regulation

(i) shall he required to auend an interview during which they shall he

requested to provine evidence of prior experiential learning ann 10

oemonstrate that they are capable of completing the Course; and

(ii) may be required to successfully complete a qualifying programme

consisting of a numher of supplementary study-units as directed by the

Roarrl ot Studies and/or suhmit a qualifying research paper prior i:)

their registration as regular students in the Course; and

(iii) are expected to complete their studit:s, inclusive of the qualifying

programme referred to in sub-paragraph (ii) of paragraph (1) (c) or

this regulation, in not less than five semesters of full time study, or

eight semesters or part-time study.

(2) Depending on the availahility of resources, the Board shall

dctermine the number of candidate<; thal may he allowed to register. The

Board shall announce the number of available placcs at the time of the call

for applications.

Course Duration

It- Tul tal-Kors

(1)

A canctioate aomitteo to the Course in terms of either sub-

paragraph (a) or (h) or paragraph (l) of regulation 3 shall he required to

complete the Course in nOI less than three semesters ano not more than six

semesters, if on full-time SIUOY, ann in nOI less than six semesters and not

more than twelve semest ers, if on parl-l imc SlUOy.

A candidate, whefher registered on a full-time or a pari-time

hasis. shall he required to re-register for the Course hefore the heginning of

each acackmic year.

Course Programme

(1)

(3) There shall be eight study-units, each of which shall he assessed

hy an assignment and/or tesl.

Dissertation

tutorial supervision. The supervisor may reler a Sluocnt whose work is

considerect unsatisfactory to the Board, through the Board of Stuoies.

(2)

The dissertation 1S expected to be around 20,000 words in

length.

(3) The proposed title and outline of the dissertation shall he

approved by the supervisor and suhmitted to the Board of Studies for final

approval, hy the end of the ninlh month of full-time study, or of the twelfth

month of part-lime study, from the date of registration as a regular student in

the Course. Any substantial modification in the title or contenl uf the

dissertation that is required by the progress of the student's sl udy and

research must he referred to the Board of 51 udies for approval.

(4) The dissertation shal1 he suhmitted in its final form hy a

prescribed date and within the period indicated in paragraphs (l) ami (2) of

regulation 4. In exceptional circumstances, Senate may grant a student a

further year in which to complete the 'dissertation.

(5) Every dissertation presented for the Degree must

(a) be either a record of original work or an ordered ann critical

expression of existing oata ,vilh regard to a particular subject; and

(h) fulfil all specifications of the relevant guidelines as regards length,

format and presentation.

No dissertation shall he accepted which is identical In

substance with a dissertation already submitted for a degree in this ur any

other university. A studenl shall not be precluded from incorporating such

previous dissertation work as may he necessary to the presentation and tuller

understanding of his exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such

incorporation is clearly acknowledged in the dissertation itself.

(7) Three copies of the dissertation, presented in the approved

style, must be submined. If the student is awarded the Degree, he shall be

required r.o submit two copies of the dissertation, one of which shall be

retained in rht' University Lihrary and another one in the (ustody of the

deparrmenr concerned.
