Statute I 21 - Statute of the AC1Idemy of

Physical Education and Sport

IN exercise of the powers conferred apon him by sections 30(05)

and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327). the Olancellor of the

Uni\'ersity of Malta has promulgated the following statute made by the

Council of the University of Malta by vinue of the powers conferred

upon it by section 3 1 of the said Act.

This Statute may be cited as Statute 121 - Statute orthe Academy of Phy&ica1

Education and Sport.

This Statute shall be applicable from April 1995 onwards.

There is hereby established an Academy of Physical Education and Sport at

the University of Mal18.

1be aims of the Academy shal l be

(a) to organize certificate. diploma and degree courses in Spons Sciences,

Spons Medicine, SportS Management, Sporu Journalism and other related areas

in accordance with regulations approved by Senate;

(b) to conduct research with a focus on Physical Education and Spons in

general ;

(c) to organize conferences, seminars and other meetings to study topics

of interest 10 Physical Education and Spon;

(d) to develop national and international links with Sports Institutions, such

as the Malta Olympic Committee and the University Sports Club,and Universities

abroad, especially those that specialise in studies related to Physica1 Educatio n

and Spon

(e) to service the requirements of the Faculty of Education and other

facult ies and institutions of the Uni\'ersity in Physical Education and Spon;

to carry out all other acts ancillary or conducive to the foregoing aims.

S. The Academy shall be gO\'emed by a Board which shall be composed as

One member 3ppointed by the Malta Olympic Committee

One member representing the Un ive rsity Spons Complex Co. Ltd .

The functi{llls of the Board shall be the following

(a) todclCrmine the policy of the Academy with regard to the achievement

of the aims of the Academy

(b)

to determine the proper financial administration of the Academy; and

(c) to collabornte with other bodies. local and foreign as necessary. forthe

achievement of the aims of the Academy.

( I ) The Academy shall have a Director and staff.

(2) The Director shall be appoin ted by the Council of tile University for a

period of three years fo llowing 3 call for applie3tions, provided that the first Director

of the Academy shall be the present Director of Spon of the University.

Academic staff shall be 3ppoimed by the Council in accordance with

(4) The administrative and cleric31 st3ff may be 3ppointed by the Board.

The Finance Officer of the Uni\'crsity shall be the Treasurer of the

Academy.

(2) The Director of the Academy shall prepare the an nu31 budget of the

Academy and submit it to the Board for approval.

(3) The Diroctorofthe Academy shall also submi t to the Council a financial

statement and to the Senate and Council an annual repon on the activi ties of the

Academy.

Amendments to this statute may be proposed by the B03rd 3nd shall require

the approv31 of the Council.
