IN c1tcrcise of the power.; conferred upon him by sections

30(5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the

University o f Malta has promulgated the fo llowing bye- laws made by

the Board of the Fac ulty in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by

section 37( I) of the said Act and whic h have been approved by the

Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37(2) of the

said Act

Citation and interpretation

I . ( I) These bye-laws may be cited as thc Bye-laws of 1997 for the Degree of

Doctor of Phi losophy . Ph.D.· in the Faculty of Laws.

In these bye·laws unless the conte1tt otherwise requires -

" the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Laws;

"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.

Applicability

These bye-laws shall be applicable from July 1995 onwards.

Registration

In addition to the requirements laid down in the Reg ulatio ns for the Degree

of Doctor o f Philosophy (Ph.D.), a cand idate registered for the Degree in the Faculty

of Laws shall sat isfy the following bye-laws.

4 . Before registering for the Degree, a candidate shall normall y be requ ired to

register in the first instance for the Master of Philosophy degree (M .Phi1.) in the Faculty

of Laws. Only in e1tceptional circumstances shall a candidate be considered for direct

registration to the Degree.

The upgrading of the registration from Master of Philosophy (M. Phil .) to

DocrorofPhilosophy (PhD .) shall nO!: be permitted before the upiry ohwelve months

of full-time study or twent y-four months of pan-time study, as the case may be, after

the registration for the Master o f Philoso phy (M.Phil.) degree, and then only on the

recommendation of the candidate's supervisor and wit h the approval of the 8oord.

Thesis

The caooidate shall acaMllpany his applicarion by a research proposal of

approximately I .500 wools in length. 'The research proposal should indicate the precise

area. of research and in particular what is novel about the proposed research.

In recommendi ng a superviSOf ,the Board shall ens ure that the supervisor has

the required upe rt ise in the particular field of knowledge .

Any chan ges to the title of the thesis shall first be aWroved by the Soan! on

the written recommendation of the SUperviSOf, and then be submitted for the approval

of the Senatc.

The length of the thesis shall not exceed 100.000 words, exclusive of

bibliographies, appendices and glossaries.

A st udent shall be required to subm it four co pies of the thes is, either

typewritten or printed , and adequately bound for the purpose ohhe ora1 examination,

The student shall be required to take to the oral examination another copy of the thesis

similarly bound and pagi nated.

II . The thesis should compl y with the fannat and presentation ru les for Ph.D.
