Master of Science - M Sc. - Degree Course Regulations, 1996

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5)

and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the

University of Malia has promulgated the following regulations made

by the Senate of the Universilyof Malta by virtue of the powersconferred

upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act

Citation and interpretation

These regulations may be cited as the Master of Science - M.Sc.-

Degree Course Regulations. 1996.

In these regulations. unless the context otherwise requires-

"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery;

"the Course" means the course leading to the Degree;

" the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Science M .Sc .

These regulations shall apply to the courses starting in the academic year

1995196 or later.

The Degree shall be offered in

(a)

Public Health

(b)

Pathology and

(c)

in any area as proposed by the Board and as approved by Senate.

To be eligible for the award of the Degree, a candidate must

(a) have been approved by the Board and reg istered as a regular student of

this University;

(b) have obtained a degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MD .) from

this University or itS equivalent from another University recognised by Senate for

this purpose;

(e) complete the course of studies, qualify in the examinations and comply

with other requirements prescribed in these regulations;

(d)

complete an individual project to the satisfaction of the Board; and

(e) comply with any other require ments prescribed in any other relevant

statutes and regulations of lhis Universi ty.

Registration

(I) A candidate must register on the appropriate ronn within the lime

specified by the Office of the Registrar.

(2) A candidate who, after due warning given in writing . persistently fails

10 atlend lectures and/or tutorials or otherwise does not cany out his academic duties

without adeq uate justification may be debarred by the Board from silting fo r any or all

of the examinations.

Course or s tudies

( I ) The Course shall be structured in such a way that it shall be completed

in a period of two years of part-ti me studies.

(2)

The Course shall consist o f

slUdy-units for which not less than 24 credits shall be assigned;

(a)

(b)

a su pervised individual research project.

(3) A catalogue of study-units wi th the credits ass igned to each unit shall

be approved by the Board and published before the stan of each semester.

(4)

Some study-units may be indicated as compulsory and others asoptional .

(5) Some study-units shall involve supervised practical work. This practical

work shall be considered as an essential component of the Course fo r which credits

shall be assigned.

(6) A candidate may apply for exemption from up to one-founh of the

study-un its. provided that he can present a q ualification which is , in the opinion of the

Board, equivalent to such units.

(I) In each semester of the Coune candidates shall be tested in the

study-uni ts covered during thai semester in accordance with the criteria established by

the Board.
