IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5)

and 31(6) o f the Education Act (Cap. 327). the Chancellor of the

University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made

by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred

upon it by sections 31 and 3S of the said Act

Citation and Interpretation

These regulations may be cited as the Master of Science - M.Sc. - in

Agricultural Sciences, Degree Course Regulations. 1996.

(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -

"the Board" means the Board of the Insti tute of Agriculture;

"the Course" means the course leading to the Degree of Master ofScience-

M .Sc . - in Agricultural Sciences

"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Science - M.sc. - in Agricultural

Sciences

"the Institute" means the Insti tute of Agriculture .

These regulations shall apply 10 the courses starting in the academic year

1994195 or later.

EligiblIlty for the Degree

To be eligible for the award of the Degree, a candi date must have

(3) been approved by the Board and registered as a regular student of the

(b) completed the Course. obtained the required credits and have been

successful in the fi na l e~aminations in accordance with these regu lations;

com pleted a dissenat ion on an approved topic to the satis faction of the

Examining Board; and

(d) satisfied all othe r requirements prescribed in these regulations and in

any other relevant regulations and statutes of the University.

Registration

In order to be admitted to the Course a candidate shall be in possession

o f the degree of Bachelor of Science in ChemistI)' and Biology (nonnally at least

Category lIB) from th is University or a degree in Chemistry and Biology from another

Universi ty recogJlised by Senate 10 be equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Science

degree in Chemistry and Biology (Category DB) of th is Universit)', or a degree in

Biology or Chemistry or Biochemistry of this or another Universi ty recognised by

Senate 10 be equi valen t to the Bachelor of Science degree (Category DB) of this

Un iversity . Ifthedegree is in either Chemistry or Biology, the candidate may be required

to com plete a course in Biology or Chemistry as the case may require.

(2) A candidate in possession of a degree from another Uni versity as

indicated in the foregoing paragraph shall . in addition to satisfying the requirements of

that paragraph, demonstrate proficiency in both wri tten and oral English.

(I) The Course shall extend over a period of twO years of full-t ime studi es

or. with the pennission of the Board. three years of part-time studie s.

(2) A candidate who has been given pe nn ission by the Board to register on

a part-time basis shall be required to sati sfy the course-work in th e first and second

year and to de vote the thi rd year to the dissertat ion_

(3) Extensions of up to one year may be approved by the Board after a

written request has Ix ... n submitted to the Director of the Institute.

(4) A candidate shall be requ ired to register at the beginning of each

academic year.

Course of studies

( I) The course of studies shall consist of study-uni ts to which not less th an

14 credits shall be assigned. and the di ssertation.

(2) A catalogue of study -units in each module, with the credits assigned to

each , shall be pub lished by the Board before Inc start of each Course .

Progress

(I) Credits shall be assigned according to the followi ng grades in descending

order of merit: A. 5 , C, 0 and F where F ind icates Fail.

(2) A candidate who fails tooblain acTedi l for a stud y.unit shall be al lowed

to be re-tested once. In the re-assessment, the candidate's credit shall be gnWed either

DOfF.

Fina] examinations

8 . ( I) The final examinations shall normally be held in JunelJuly oflhe second

year and shall consist of five written papers.

Examination papers shall be graded in descending order of merit A, B.

C, 0 and F, where F ind icates Fai l.

A candidate who fails in not more than three o rthe examination papers

shall be allowed \0 re-take thc eltamination/s during the supplementary session normally

held in September. provided that the grade awarded in a suppleme ntary exami nation

shall be either 0 or F.

To satisfy the final examinations requirements a candidate must be

successful in each paper.

Dissertation

9 . (I) W ithin three months of first registration a candidate shall submi t to the

Directoro( tbe Institute a titk and an outline proposal of a dissenation and the name of

a me mber oflhe Institute'S academic staff who has accepted to act as a superv isor, for

approval of the Board.

(2) Every dissenation presen ted for the Degree shall be work of an original

nature or an onginal appraisal of existing published data and shall represent knowledge

in an agricultural area, preferably relating to local conditions.

(3) The dissertation shall be of such leng th as directed by the Board but

shaJi not nonnally be less than 30.000 words or more than 3S.ooo words.

The dissertation shall be presented in such a format and be submitted

in such number of copies as the Board may direct.

Exami nin g Board

10 . ( I) 1bere shall be an Examining Board composed of an ex ternal exam iner

from another Unive rsity and another rourmembersorthe academic staff. The Examinin g

Board shall be appointed by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

The Examining Board shall be responsible for the asscssment of the

dissertation and the final examinations.

The Examining Board shall requirt: each candidate to attend a ~i\lll

(4) A candidate whose dissertation is found inadequate may be required

by the Examining Board to rewrite the dissertation in whole or in part and re-su bmit it

for examination aflcr &tleast three months.

11 . (1) The final result of each candidate shall rake into consideration the credits

obtained. the results oflhe written eJ[aminations and the merits of the dissertation .

(2) The names of the candidates who qual ify for the Degree shall be published

in alphabetical order and classified as follows
