until delivery is completed. Measure with a stop watch the lime of absorption , in
seconds , from the instant the water touches the 5pecimen until the drop of water is
completely absorbed, as indicated by no further reflection of light from it when vie-
wed at an angle.
Carry o ut five tests on each side of the pape r. Calculate and report 10
three significant figures the average water absorption rate in seconds.

A.S
A.S. I Apparatus - An instrwnent that measures the combination of resistance
due to surface friction and flexural rigidity of sheet material wh en forced by a blade
through a slot that has parallel edges a nd a width of 6.3Smm .
A.S.2 The specimens - From five roUs taken at random cut 20 random test
specime ns (i.e. 10 pairs) each of size lOOmm x lOOm m with adjacent edges parallel to
the machine and cross direction respectively.
A.5.3 Procedure - Calibrate th e instrument according to the manufacturer 's in-
structions. Place a pair of specimens next to each othe r a nd centrall y o ver the slot with
their cross directions parallel to the slot. Start the blade mechanism and record the
maximum reading. Turn the two speci mens through 'Xf' so that thei r machine directions
are paraUelto the slot. Again record the maximum reading. Repeat the procedure o n
the remai ning nine pain of specimens e nsuring that an equal number of tests are per-
formed o n each side of the paper. Calculate and report to th ree significant figures the
average of all the readings in milline wtons as the 50hness of the pape r.
