-B.ENC. (HONS.) - DEGREE COURSE REGULATIONS, 1993

IN cxcrcise oflhe powcr.u:onfem:d upon him by sections30(5) and

31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancello r of the Univemly

oCMalta has promulgated the following regul ations made by the Senate

of the Universily of Malla by vinue of th e powers conferred upon it by

section 35 of the said Act.

These regulations may be cited as The Bachelor of Engineering

(Honours) - B.Eng. (H'ms. ) - Degree Course Regulat ion ~. 1993.

( I) To qualify for the conferment of the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering

(Honours) - B. Eng. (Hons.), a candidate must have

(a) been admitted to the U niversi ty as a regu lar student in accordance with

the Admission Regulat ions and , in addition, satisfied the Special Entry

Requirements set out in subparagraphs (a) or (b) or (c) of paragraph (2) or is

admilled to the Course under paragraph (3) 0( these re gulations;

(b) completed the oourse of studies and qualified in the examinations in

accordance with these regulations; and

(c) sa tisfied all other requirements set out in these regu lations and any other

relevant statutes. regulations or bye -laws of tile Universi ty of Mal ta.

(2) Subject to the provisions ofparagr<lph (3) of this regulation the Special Entry

Requ iremen ts for the Course shall he as follows

<a) two passes at Ad vanced Level, at G rade C or belief in Mathematics and

Physics and a pass in a third subject at Advanced l...e vel from the list of approved

subjects (preferably another Mathematics o ption, Enginee ring Drawing,

Chemislry, Computer Studies, Electronics or Economics) in the Mat riculation

Examinatio n of the Universit y or at oorrespondin g levels of other examinations

recognised by Senate for the purposes of the Admission Regulations, provided

that any of the following may be offered instead of the third ~ A" Level subject

Institute, Courses No. 255 , VI, 281 o r 803; Or

(ii) the Certificate in Industrial Electronics or lhe Fellenbe rg Training

Cen tre; or

(iii) an Ordinary Technician Diploma of theCit)' and GuildsofLondon

Institute Course No. 800 in Mechanical an d Electrical E ngineering; or

(b) a Higher Technical Diploma of the Ci t )' and Guilds of the London

Institute Course No. 800 in Electrical Engineering and a pass at Ad vanced Level in

Physics at Grade C or bener in the Matriculation fu:aminalionof the U niversity or

at corresponding level of other examinations recognised by Senate for the

purpoKS of the Admission Regulations; or

(c) A Hi ghe r Techn ical Diploma of the City and Guilds of the London

Institute Course No. 800 in Mecbanical Enginee ring and a pass at Advanced Level

in Mathematics al Grade C or better in the ,Matricul ation Examination of the

University or at corresponding level of other examin ations recognised by Senale

for the purposes of the Admission Regula tions.

(3) A ca ndidate who is a gradua te of a universi ty or has other qualiflC3 tiOfls

co nsidered suffi cie nt, may be exempt ed by the Admissions Board , o n the advice of the

Faculty Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these Special Course

Requ irements.

(I) The Course shall elltend over a period off OUT yean; and shall lead , subjea as

hc reinafter provided, to the award of the B. Eng. (Ho ns.) Degree in eit her Electrical

Engineeri ng o r Mechanical Engineering.

(2) Each year shall comprise tw() se mesters of sl\Idy foll owed by thirteen wee ks

of industrial tra ining except in the Final Ye ar.

(3) Candidates shall opt for Elearical or Mechanical Engineering by the end of

the first semester of the First Year of the Course.

Candidates sha ll undertake industrial training as approved by the Faculty

(5) In the Fou rth Yc arca ndiclat cs shall also undert ake a projec;t a pproved by the

the Head of Department concerned.

(6) Optional modu les may be cha nged by the Facul ty Board with the approval of

Senate in orde r to reflect advances made in Technology. The list of these modules shall

be published by the Faculty Board prior 10 the commencement 0( each academic year.

( I) Except in the Third Year of the Mechanical Engineering option, all

examin ations shall normally be held during May/June and resit examinations shall be

held before the end of Se ptember.

(2) The Third Ye ar of the Mecha nical Engi nee ring opeioo scWonal

enminations ihall be bdd during April. 1be examination of the Engineering Design

Project and all resit examinations shall be held before the end of September.

(3) There shaU be Boards of ElIminers for each year o f the Course to conduct

a nd assess examinations. Exam ination papers for the Third Year exam inationu hall be

moderated by external ex.miners. The Examination Boards for the Fourth Year

elimi nation shall include exte rnal examin e rs.

(4) Assessment of performance of candidates during each academicyearshall be

made by means of c:ourseworlr. assessmen t and examinations. A candida te shall

complete successfully the appropriate coursework and examina ti on requirements for

tbe year before he is allowed to proceed 10 the following year of the Course.

ElI.cept in the Four1h Year of the Course a candidate who fails in not more

than two modules in IIny one year shall be allowed to resit those modules during the resit

examinations of Ihat year. Only the minimum pass mark shall be recorded in passeod

resit modules' examinations.

(6) A candidate who in the Fourth Year of the Couroe fails in not more than two

modules shall be required 10 undertake a ~i~1I' 1'0« examination. If successful. the

Degree classification awarded 10 such a candidate shall not be higher than Third Qass

Honours. If the candidate fails in the IIillo3 I'OU examination he shall be required 10

repeat the year.

(7) A candidate who fails in more than two modules iD anyone year shall repeat

the year.

(8) Only one repeat yea r shall be allowed throughout the whole Course. Failure

at a resit examination of a repeat year shall require a candidate to withdraw from the

course.

(9) A candidate who repeat s either the FiNt o r the Second Year of his Course

shall carry the marks obtained during the repeat year except those in which he had

failed in the previous year. For these, if he passes, he shall be awarded minimum pass

marks.

(10) A candidate who repeat5 either the Third o r Fo urth Year before completing

the Course successfull y shall be considered o nly for a Pass Degree (B. Eng.).

( Il ) In each year, the results obtained by candidates in each subject shaU be

published in alphabetical order in o ne of the grades A , B, C , D . E and F, A being the

highest and E the lowest pass grade. The grades shall take into accoun t perfonnaocc in

examinations and course work.

S. Dearec ReAdts

( I) The pcrfonnance of candidates during the First, Second, TIlird and Fourth

Years of the Course and at sessional examinations shall be re\liewed by a Board, madc

up of the Dean of the Faculty, the Heads of Department , the Extcrnal Examiner and

the Academic Staff of the Departme nt, fo r the purpose of Degree award

recommendations to the Faculty Board.

(2) The Board constituted under the preceding paragraph shall establish its own

Pfoccdures to am\le at its recommendations to the Faculty Board. These procedures

shall be made known in a report to the Faculty Board auached 10 the Degree

Oassiflcalio n list of candida tes.

(3) The Final Oassification of the Degree for e\lef}' successful candidate shall be

based on the results obtai ned in each year of the Course.

(4) The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - 8 . Eng. (Hons.) - Degree shall

be awarded according 10 the following classification

First OllSS Honours

Second Oass Honours (Uppe r Division)

Sccood Oasl Hooourl (Lower Division)

Third Oass Honours.

(S) A Pass Degree or Bachelor of Engincering- B. En,. - mall be awarded to

a candidate who, in the opinion of the Board constituted under pa r.gnllph (1) of Ihis

regu lation and of the Faculty Board , has satisfied the Board of Examiners in each year

of the Course bul has not lchieved the appropriate k vcl of qualifICations for H()nC)Uf$.
