THE MAGISTER JURIS IN INTERNATIONAL LAW_M, J UN. ,-

DEGREE COURSE REGULATIONS, 1994

IN exemloe of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and

3i(6) ofthe Education Act (Cap. 327), the ChanceUorofthe University

of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate

of the University by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 3i

and 35 of the said Act

CIt.lion and Interpt'dlllion

(i) These regulations may be cited as the Magister Juris in inte rnational

In theloe regulations, unless the context otherwise requires-

hthe Course~ means the Course leadin g to the Degree of Magister Juris in

International Law-M.Jur.

"the Degree" means the Degree of Magister Iuris in International La",,-

M.l ur.

These regulations shall apply to coursc:s starting in 1993 or later.

'The duration oflhe Course ihall be of one acade mic year of full time study or

( I) 'The course of slUdies for the Degree shall consist of

<a) eithe r (i) study-units for which not less than sixtee n credits are assigned,

(2) A cat alogue of study-u nits. with the CTeditl assigned to each, shall be

published be fore the beginning of each academic year.

(3) Notwithstanding the provisions of plIragraph ( I) of this regulation, the

Faculty Board of Law may allow a candidate 10 obtain the Degree by thesis only, In

such instar>CcS, candidates may be uquired by the Faculty Board to attend courses

relevant to the proposed area ofresearch .

Counework and examlnallom

(I) Candidates &hall be asses.sed continuously during their cout$ework and

they shall ~ t for an end-of-year examination in each of the st udy-units ch~n .

(2) Where a candidale i$ following the Course in lenDS or pa,*,gnr.ph ( I) of

regulation 5 COUr5CWOTk asse~ment shall constitute twenty fiY<: per cent (25%) of the

final mark and the examination mark shall constitute the remaining KY<:nty fjy<: per

cenl (75% ) .

(3) Marks shal l range from A to E with A bei ng the highest. The pass mark

shall be C. A aondidate fail ing in a Jubj.ect with a mark of not less than D shall be

allowed to sit a supplementary uaminalion within three months of the pu blication of

the Te$ults of the: end-of-year euminatiorus: .

(4) A candidate faili ng in a subject with a mark below D , or- failing in more

Ihan one subject . or failing in the supplement ary examination shall be considered 10

have definitively failed.

(I ) The thesis IihaU beof nol more than h,'enty five tho~ (lS,{O) ~

and shall deal with a subject falli ng within one or more of the subjects re ferred to to

regulation 5. [t shall contain an origin al oontribution to academic knowledge .

(2) The candidate shall pte5Cnt in writing to the Faculty Boa rd a thesis

proposal not later than th ree mont hs from the beginning of the academic year refcrred

to in regul ation 4.

(3) After the approval of thc the§is proposal , thecandidateshall be assigned

a supetvisor who shall be a member of the Faculty of Law.

(4 ) "The candidatc shall submit the thesis not later than the end of the

academic year referred 10 in regulation 4.

(5) The Faculty Board of Law may grant a candidate pennission to CJltend

the date ofsubmission referred to in paragraph (4) of this regulation. In any even t. such

ex tension shall not be beyond th e erld of the neXI academic year after the end of the

acade mic ye ar referred to in regulation 4.

(6) The F:KUhy Board of Law ~hall appoint a Board of Examinen,

oomposedofthree memben , toe.aminethe thesi, . Tt.c: Chairman ofthe Board shall be

a member of the Facul ty Boa rd of Law.

(7) The candidate shall submit 8 copies of the thesis and declare in wri ting

thltthe thesis is hisown work and confonm to the requiremenl$ $toted in paragraph (I)

of this regulation .

(8) "The Board of E.uminen shall be convened by its Chairman to discuss

the thesis. It shalhlso hear the c:a ndidate in defcoe<:: of the thesis.

(9) The Board of Examiners may approve Ihe thesis or it may require the

candidate to make corr«t ions or to completely rewrite the thesis within a stated time

limit. It DUly also reject the thesis altogether.

(10) A candidate whose thesis is rejected or whose oorrc<:lions or re-writins

are c:ons>dered inadequate or who has not submi tt ed his thesis or it, con ections within

the required time limit shall not be awarded the Degree.

Award of the Degree

( I ) On the basis of his results including his performance in his thesis . or.

where theeandid.ate has b« n allowed 10 oblai n the Degree by thesis <)nly aooordi ng to

his performance in his thesis . the successful candida te shall be awarded the Degree wilh

distinction, wi th credit Or without special mention.

(2) The names of candidates who have been awarded lite Degree shall be

published on the notice board of the Univernty in alphabetical order and in the order 01

merit they may have obtained.
