There is hereby established an Institute for Child

Development 1.1 the University of Malta Il$ an inler- Faculty and inler-

agency institution.

The aims of the im,lilllte shall be as follows

(a) to organise mullidisciplinary research and services in the

field o f child development;

(b) to organise. provide and research multidisciplinary

babilitationlrehabilitation programmes for children wilh special

needs and their families in co-operation with governmental and

non-governmental Agcooes;

(c) to SCI up eertifi<;alc, diploma, degree and postgraduate

roUTSC:S in the field of childhood disabilities;

(d) to 5ervict: Faculties .nd other insti tutiOIll in the field of

child development Qpecial1y with regard to the .re. of children

with speci.l needs;

(e) to organ ise and promote multidisciplinary workshops,

!leminars and ronferences on child development and childhood

disabilities;

(f) to!le1'Ve 11$ a rcwuroe ttntre and offer consultative

services in the field of child development to individuals ,

governmental and non-governmental agencies;

(g) to undenake any other activities in the field of child

development in co-operation with governmental and non-

governmental agencies;

(h) \0 promote the role of paren~ as equal panneB with

profession'lt. .nd their empowerment for informed choices

regarding their children and families;

(i) to promote the principle that every child has the same

righu as other members of sociely 10 realise his individual capacity

for physical, $Ocial, emotional and inlellcctual development; and

(j) to promote the rights of all children for integrated

servioes within the community I nd mainstream systems.

The Institute $hall be governed by I Board composed as

Chainnan: lbe Rector or his nominated deputy

Vice-Chairman: The Director of the Institute;

The Chainnan of the National Commission for the

Handicapped or his nominated deputy;

The Chainnan, or his nominated deputy, and the E.lceutive

Director of the Eden Foundation;

Five members nominated as to one eacb by the Faculty Board

of Education, the Board o f the InRitute of Soo:ial Welfare, the

Board of the ln5tirute of Heal th Care, the Faculty Board of

Medicine and Surgery, and the Department of Psycbology;

Two memben appointed AI to ooe each by the Council and

Senate of the University;

The same member may repruent more than one interest.

The functionsof the Board lhall be the foUowin,

(,) to determine the policy of the Institute with re,ard to the

objectivelltlled above;

(b) to ensure the proper financial administration of the

Institute; and

(c) 10 ensure collaboration with other bodies, Jocal and

foreign, neceuary for achievin, the aimsof lhe Institute.

(I) The Institute shall have I Director and Staff.

(2) The Director shall be appointed by the Council of the

Uniyersi ty for a period of three years followin, a eaU for applieati0n5.

(3) Academic and other members of staff shall be appointed

by the Council on the recommendation of the Board, provided th.at the

Board may itself appoint non·aeademic ltafffor periods!)()( ucceding

one year.

7 The Finance Officer of the Umversity of Malta shall be the

Treasurer of the Institute. The DIrector shall prepare the annual budget

of the Institute and submit it to the Board for approval. The DIrector

shall also submit to the COllllC!! a financIal statement and to Senate an

Annual report on the activities of the Institute

8 Amendments to this statute may be proposed by the Board for

approval of the COllllC!! of the Umversity
