(I) There shall be struck a medal to be known as "Ihe Malta

GenTge Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Medal" (hereinafter in these rules

referred to as 'lhe Medal') to be awarded in aocordance with these

Rules .

(2)

Awardsofthe Medal shall have effect On April 15, 1992.

J. <I) The Medal shall be circular , in cupro-niekel and 36mm in

diameter. bearing o n the obverse a representation of Ihe Emblem of

Malta and the year ~1\l92" in base. and on the revel'l>e the British

George Cross in the centre. encirCled by the words ~ BHALA

by a Maltese cross in ch ief and the date ~1942" in base. all in relief: thc

whole heingsuspended from a bar within relief an ol ive branch and palm

frond joincd in the centre.

(2) The Medal is suspended from a riband 32mm in width

being blue with two narrow central vertical stripes. " 'hite and red. each

3mm in width; the whole having a moire effect .

(3) On appropriate occasions a miniature of the Insignia ma y

be worn. which mall measure appro~imatcly 18m m in diameter . wi th

the ribbon 16mm in width.

(I)

Eligibility for the Medal shall be restricted to

(a) All fonner uniformed members of the Allied Armed

Forces and Mercantile Marine who, at any time during the

qualifying period , sclVcd

(i)

in Malta ; or

(ii) in air or sea operations in the Mediterranean

connected with the defence, relief or supply of Malta,

including participation in convoys and their escorts; or

(iii) in operations mounted from Malta against the Axis

Forces; and

(b) Civilians who. at any lime during IM qualifying period ,

WCI"<' in Malta in onc of the following categories

(i) Malla Police Fon:e personnel and Special

Constables

(ii) Malta Dockyard Potioe and MIlia Dockyard

personnel who se~ wilh t he Dockyard I'kfence BaneI)' ;

(iii) Nursing members of Ihe Voluntary Aid

Detachment, Ihe Red Cross and SI. Jo.tJn Ambulance , who

served in naval. military and civil hOl.pitals

(iv) Ma lta

Precautions)

(v) Malta Au~iliary Corps

(vi) Malta Volunteer Defence Force or HomeG uard;

(vii)

Fi re Brigade; and

(viii) District Commissioners. Regional PrOledion

Officers and Protection Officers,

(2) Penons considering themselves eligible for the award of

the Medal are 10 complctc the officia l application form as SCI OUI in the

Schedule to these Rules, and return Ihis, duly ce rtified by the particular

organisa tion 10 which they belonged, or by such authority as holds the

records of that organ isa tion, to the Chainnan of the Nominations

Committee, Malta George Cross Fift ieth Ann ivel'$3ry Medal, Office of

the Prime Min ister, Auberge de Casti lle, Valletta, Malta, not later than

the ISl h April, 1994;

Provided that Maltese citizens falling under subparagraph (b)

of paragraph ( I ) of this rule may instead of such cenifica ti on produce

the discharge cenificate from the relative orga nisation.

(3) The Medal may IlOl be awa rd<:d posthumously.

The qualifying period for the awa rd of the Medal shall be the

period bet_en June 10, 1940 and SeP'\ember 8, 1943, both dates

inclusive .

( I) The Medal shall be presented

(a)

By the President of Malta ; or

(b) By any High Commissioner, Ambassador. other

diplomatic Of oonsul. r representative (including honorary

representative) of Malta, Of any other penon 50 authorised , to

make the award in the name of the President

Provided that. where il shall IH)t be OOI'1venient o r practical for

the presentation 10 be made in person , the Medal may be delivered by

registered JlOSI or such other means as may be considered cKpedicnt.

(2) When Medals are presented by the President, he shall

address recipients as fono~;

MOn behalf of the Government and people. I confer on you the

National Commemorative Medal 10 mark lite Fiftieth Annivcl'Slll')'

of the award of the GC()rge Cross 10 Mal l~ . ~.

(3) 1lIe repn:scnlalive of the President shall address

recipients as follows

"In the name of the President of Malta , and on be half of tile

Government and people of Malta. I ronfer 011 you the National

Com memorati~ Medal 10 mark the Fiftieth Annivc~1')' of the

award of the Genrge CrOM to Malta . ".

Revocation otthe Iwardof the Medal shan be governed by the _
