In exercise of the powcn conferred upon him by se<:lions 28(5) and

29(6) of the Education Act. 1988, the:. Chanc;c,llor of the University of

Mal ta has promulgated the foUowing regulations made by the Senate of

the Universit y of Malta in vi rtue of the powers conferred upon i1 by

section )3 of the said Act .

Citation

The5e regulations may be cited as the RegulalK>m fOI 1992 for the

l. (I) These regulations may be ci ted as the Course leading 10 the

P05lgradualc Diploma and Deg' " of Masttr of ~ronlOlogy and Geriatric,;

In these regulatioo ~, unless the context othelWise requires-

"the 8oard~ mean~ the Board of the Institute of Gerontology;

~the Course:~ means the Course: leading 10 the Postyaduate Diploma or

Degree of Master of Gerontology and Geriatrics - Dip.Ger. - M.Ge r. ;

"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Gerontolos~ and Geriatrics

"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Ge rontolog~ and

Ge riatrics.

"These regulalions shall be applicable to courses starting in Octobe r 1990 or

(I) A candidate $hall be eligible to appl y for registration in the Course if he

(3) a degree 01 professional qualification in 11 discipline or S<:ience pertaining

10 onc of the: caring professions obtained from Ihis U niversity Or one of its

Insti tutes or from 11 foreign University or Ins1i tule or from another appropriate

authority. whether local or foreign , rccogni$ed by this Universi ty; or

(b) any other professional qualification deerned ao;;cptable by Senate if il is

accompanied with such work ing experienoc: in the care of the elderly as may be

approved by the Board,

(2) A ca nd idate woo does not have the qualifications referred to in

paragraph (1) orthis rc:gulalioo may be admiued 10 tbe Course by the Board as a mature

student if he shows 10 ils satisfaction that he has an exceptional degree of experience in

Ihe care of Ihe elderly and that he has the necessary background to follow the Course

with profit.

(3) No candidate shall ~ adm illed to the Course unla.s he is fluent in the

English language .

Coorse or Studies

4 .. (I) The ~urse shall ~st ofsludy-units and practice plaoe ments for which

18 credlls shall ~ U$lgned . A credit s.hall ~ awa rded on the basis of lhe assessment of

progress achieved on completion of th e required study and a!i$ignments. Norm all y each

study-u nil shall include 14 lectures, accompanied by a number of tu torials and course

assignments.

(2) A catalogue of study· un its with the numbe r of credits assigned to each

unit shall be pu blished by the Board be fore the commencement of the Course .

(3)

The Course shall be compoKd of

(a) Module 1:_ 8 study-units comprisi ng a common core of subjects

including Social G erontology and Medical Geriatrics, to be fOllowed by all

students .

(b) Module 2:-

5 study-un its in either Social Ge rontology or Medical

Geriatrics made lip of three contplll:;ory study-units with two optional study-units.

A candidate follows onc of these twO streams according to his enlry QualifICations.

(c) Modu le 3:- Practical plaoements to which five credits shall be

assigned.

(4) The Board s.hall appoint a Course coordinator for study-units in Social

Gerontology and a course coordinator fo r study-units in Medical Geriatrics.

leading to the Diploma , subject to paragraph (10) of this regulation.

(3) Students admi tted 10 the Course leadi ng 10 the Degree under paragraph

( I) of this regulation shall be req uired to-

(a ) complete Modules 2 and 3 successfully;

(b)

pass the final examination for the Degree; and

(t) write a thesis on an origi nal research project .

(4) On registration for the Course leadi n, to the Degree st udents shall

submit the proposed title of thei r thesis and an outli ne of a research projtct 10 be

performed for the purpose of the Ihesis, The project shall be subject to approval by the

Board which Shall also nominate a supervisor for eadl student .

(S ) The thesis shall contai n the results of the rnc:arch project, • cri tical

review of Ihe relevant literature and. critical discussion of the results. Thc thC$i$ shall

be not less than 10,000 words Ion, .nd shall be submitted not later Ihan eightccn

months from the date of ao;eptarv:e of its title. The students may perlorm or complete

the re$Cacch project and writing of the thesis in their respective countries.

(6) The thesis shall be na mined by an examining board appoin ted by

Senate.

(7) H the thesis does not reach the rC(juired standard tbe student may be

req uired to amend and rc-submit it within a period not uecedingone year. A lIudent

may be required to defend his thesis.

(S) The final results of shllients admitted unde r paragraph (I) of this

regulation shall be published afte r the completion of the Degree examination, the

completion of the practice placement and the submission of the thesis. The final mark$

will be allocated as follows

(9) Students ""1\0 register for the Course leading \0 the Degree under

paragraph (2) of Ihis regulation shall be required 10 submit a thesis as provided in

parag.raph$ (4), (5). (6) and (7) of this regulation .

(10) St udents who obtai ned the grade MA" or Mlr in the Course leading 10

the Oiploma which ended in 1\1'91 may appl~ for registration for the Course leading 10

the Degree within 6 months of the publicalion of these regulations.

(11) The final result of students admitted 10 the Course leading to the

Degree under paragraph (2) or (10) of 111;5 regulation sh~ll be based on the assessment

of the tllesis.

( 12) The final grade for success ful candidates shall be amended on a :;cale

from M A~ 10 M B~ , "A " being the highest grade and designated as kPassed with

Distinction (Cum Laudet and ~ B " indicating a MPass". "F'" indicates Failed.
