Malta has promulgmed the fvllowing sta tute made by the Council of the

University of Malta in virwe of the powers conferred upon it by sc:ction

31 of the said Act .

STATUTE I07-MEDITERRANEA N INSTITUTE

There i~ hereby established a Mediterranea n Institut e at the University of

The aims of the Institme shall be 10 promote Medite rranean Studies. in

particular by

(a)

organizing in terdisciplinary courses

(b)

undertaking and publishing rcseMch

(c) supporting speeializ.:d Centres and Progmtmncs in diffe rent fieldsof the

Arts and Social Sciences

(d)

collahomli ng with lhe Foundation for International $ludi.:s on projects

and aC1i\'it ie~ of mutualmlerest.

The Institute shall be gV"erned by a 8 oord.

3.2 The functions of the Board shall be th e following

(a) det ermi ning the policy of the Institute with regard 10 Ihe objeelives

Slated above ;

(b) ove rsecing I hc financial admi nist ration of the Institute ;

(c) ensuring the coll abora tion with other bodies, local and foreign.

ne<;essary for achicving Ihe aims of Ih e Institute.

The Institute shall have a Director and staff.

4.1 The Director shall be a ppointed by the Council of Ihe University on the

recomme ndation of the Boa rd for a period of thrcc yel'''' following a ca lt for

applications;

4.2 Academic und o th er members of staff shalt be appointed by the Council on

the recomme ndation of the Board

Provided that the Doord may itse lf appoint non-academic slaff for periods 001

exceeding one year.

l1le Direcl0r shall be responsible for the day 10 day ad mi nistrlll ion of the

Instit ute. accord ing to the policy established by the Boa rd , the drawing up of the annu al

budge t, fi nancial st:uemcnt and report on the activities of the Institut e, Th c Finilrlce

Office r of thc U n i\'Cr~ity will be the Trca,u rcf of the Institu te.

Am endments to this Statute may be proposed by the Board for thc arrroval of
