ACT No. XV of 2024

AN ACT to amend the Social Work Profession Act, Cap. 468, and to

provide for other matters ancillary or connected thereto.

BE IT ENACTED by the President, by and with the advice and

consent of the House of Representatives, in this present Parliament

assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

The short title of this Act is the Social Work Profession

(Amendment) Act, 2024 and this Act shall be read and construed as

one with the Social Work Profession Act, hereinafter referred to as the

"principal Act".

In article 2 of the principal Act, in the definition ''recognised

degree in social work'' immediately after the words ''by the University of

Malta'' there shall be added the words ''or issued by the Malta College of

Arts, Science and Technology'' and the word ''foreign'' shall be deleted.

Article 3 of the principal Act shall be amended as follows

(a) in the first proviso to sub-article (3) thereof

immediately after the words ''of the University of Malta'' there

shall be added the words ''or of the Malta College of Arts, Science

and Technology'';

(b) in sub-article (5) thereof immediately after the words

''by the University of Malta'' there shall be added the words ''or

by the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology''; and

(c) in sub-article (6) thereof immediately after the words

''of the University of Malta'' there shall be added the words ''or

by the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology''.

Article 4 of the principal Act shall be amended as follows

Amendment of

article 4 of the

principal Act.

(a) in sub-article (1) thereof, the words ''seven members''

shall be substituted by the words ''nine (9) members'';

(b) in sub-article (1)(a) thereof, the words ''four

members'' shall be substituted by the words ''five (5) members'';

(c) in sub-article (1)(a)(iv) thereof, the words ''with at

least five years experience;'' shall be substituted by the words

''with at least five (5) years experience; and'' and immediately

after there shall be added the following new sub-paragraph

''(v) a registered social worker chosen by the

Minister from amongst a list of persons nominated for such

purpose by the registered social workers or the associations

working in the field of social work in Malta

Provided that in case no person is nominated by the

registered social workers or the associations working in the

field of social work in Malta, the Minister shall make the

appointment from amongst registered social workers;''; and

(d) in sub-article (1)(b)(ii) thereof, the words ''University

of Malta:'' shall be substituted by the words ''University of Malta;

and'' and immediately after there shall be added the following

new sub-paragraph

''(iii) one (1) social worker nominated by, and from

amongst the permanent academic staff responsible for

social work and social policy, education and training at the

Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology:''.
