I, Mary Harney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by

section 3

of the

European Communities Act 1972

(No. 27 of 1972), and for the purpose of giving effect to Council Directive 89/617/EEC of 27 November 1989

, hereby make the following regulations

1 These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations 2002.

2 In these Regulations

“Principal Regulations” mean the European Communities (Units of Measurement) Regulations 1992, (

S.I. No. 255 of 1992

);

“Regulations of 2001” mean the European Communities (Units of Measurement) (Amendment) Regulations 2001, (

S.I. No. 283 of 2001

).

3 Regulation 4(2) of the Principal Regulations is amended by substituting the following paragraph for paragraph (e) (inserted by the Regulations of 2001)

“(e) for the specific field of application set out in Schedule 6 the units of measurement listed therein may be used until 31 December 2004 and shall not be used thereafter, and”.

These Regulations provide for a further extension of the time period during which conversion of road speed measurement signs to units of the metric system may be carried out.
