S.I. No. 36/2002 - European Communities (Marine Equipment) (Amendment) Regulations, 2002

1. These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Marine Equipment) (Amendment) Regulations, 2002.

2. The European Communities (Marine Equipment) Regulations, 1998 (

S.I. No. 545 of 1998

) are hereby amended by the substitution of the following for the definition of “Directive” in Regulation 2.(1) :-

“ “Directive” means Council Directive 96/98/EC

(1)

of 20 December, 1996, as amended by Commission Directive 98/85/EC

(2)

of 11 November, 1998 and Commission Directive 2001/53/EC

(3)

of 10 July, 2001”.

These Regulations give effect to Commission Directive 2001/53/EC of 10 July, 2001 which amend Council Directive 96/98/EC, the purpose of which is to enhance safety at sea and the prevention of marine pollution through the uniform application of the relevant international instruments relating to certain marine equipment.

I, FRANK FAHEY, Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by

section 3

of the

European Communities Act, 1972

(No. 27 of 1972), and for the purposes of giving effect to Commission Directive No. 2001/53/EC of 10 July, 2001 hereby make the following regulations
