S.I. No. 251/2002 - Public Health (Tobacco) Act, 2002, (Commencement) Order, 2002

1. This Order may be cited as the Public Health (Tobacco) Act, 2002, (Commencement Order, 2002.

2. The 31st day of May, 2002 is hereby appointed as the day on which Part 2 of the

Public Health (Tobacco) Act, 2002

shall come into operation.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order appoints the 31st day of May, 2002 as the date for the coming into operation of part 2 of the

Public Health (Tobacco) Act, 2002

.

Part 2 of the Act provides for the establishment of the Office of Tobacco Control on a statutory basis. The Office of Tobacco Control was established on an administrative basis in 2000. The Office will consist of a chairperson and 11 other members and will have a chief executive officer and staff. Other standard provisions for a statutory body are provided for in Part 2, e.g. functions, meetings, committees, remuneration, superannuation, etc.

Part 2 of the Act also provides for the establishment of the Tobacco Free Council which will be established by the Office.

section 1

of the

Public Health (Tobacco) Act, 2002
