1. These Regulations may be cited as the Health (Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Thickening and Gelling Agents in Food) (Amendment) Regulations, 1990.

2. The Health (Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Thickening and Gelling Agents in Food ) Regulations, 1980 (

S.I. No. 35 of 1980

) as amended by the Health (Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Thickening and Gelling Agents) (Amendment) Regulations, 1982 (

S.I. No. 273 of 1982

) and the Health (Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Thickening and Gelling Agents in Food) (Amendment) Regulations, 1985 (

S.I. No. 186 of 1985

) are hereby further amended by

a

) the substitution in Part 1 of Schedule 1 thereto of the following

"(i) Pectin

(ii) Amidated Pectin

for

b

) the deletion in Part 1 of Schedule 1 thereto of the following substances

Lactylated fatty acid esters of glycerol and propane-1, 2-diol

Polyoxyethylene (8) stearate

Polyoxyethylene (40) stearate

Dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate;

(

c

) the substitution in Part II of Schedule 1 thereto of the words "E440 Pectin" and "E440 Amidated Pectin" for the words "E440(A) Pectin" and "E440(B) Amidated Pectin" respectively; and

(

d

) the deletion in Part II of Schedule 1 thereto of the references to and accompanying specific purity criteria for each of the following substances

Lactylated fatty acid esters of glycerol and propane-1, 2-diol

Polyoxyethylene (8) stearate.

Polyoxyethylene (40) stearate

Dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations update and further amend the Health (Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Thickening and Gelling Agents in Food) Regulations, 1980 (

S.I. No. 35 of 1980

) in order to give effect to EC Council Directives No. 86/102 (OJ No. L088. 3/4/86 P. 40) and 89/393 (O.J NO. L186, 30/6/89 p. 13) relating to emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickeners and gelling agents for use in foodstuffs.
