Vu le recours en matière civile formé le 16 novembre 2020 par A.________ contre cet arrêt;
Vu les courriers spontanés adressés au Tribunal fédéral par le conseil de B.________, intimé au recours;
Vu la lettre du 5 janvier 2021 dans laquelle l'avocat du recourant indique que son mandant retire le recours précité, à la suite d'un accord survenu entre les parties;
Considérant qu'il y a lieu de prendre acte de ce retrait et de rayer la cause du rôle ( art. 32 al. 2 LTF );
que les frais judiciaires réduits sont mis à la charge du recourant ( art. 66 al. 2 et 3 LTF );
Considérant, au sujet des dépens, qu'il n'y a pas lieu d'en allouer, l'intimé n'ayant pas été invité à déposer une réponse au recours;
Ordonne :
1. Il est pris acte du retrait du recours.
2. La cause 4A_597/2020 est rayée du rôle.
3. Un émolument judiciaire de 300 fr. est mis à la charge du recourant.
4. Il n'est pas alloué de dépens.
5. La présente ordonnance est communiquée aux mandataires des parties et à la Cour d'appel civile du Tribunal cantonal du canton de Vaud.
